Despite the challenging name, oxaloacetate is a promising compound for improving cognitive and physical performance. It is primarily researched as a tool for reducing the effects of aging [1], helping overcome brain related injuries [2], and protecting neurological connections against decay [3]. There is some evidence it may also help with cancer treatment [4].

The reason oxaloacetate can be helpful as a brain optimization compound is because it is part of many metabolic reactions in the body. While the molecule is hard to stabilize, it can be used in certain ways for managing and increasing lifespan.

Oxaloacetate Benefits

For those who have taken university level science, the Kreb’s cycle is probably familiar. Within this cycle in the body, the body produces pyruvate and continues necessary cycles to help us function normally.

Key to this process is oxaloacetate. Even though it seems like a synthetic compound created in a lab somewhere, it’s actually a molecule needed for many internal processes.

Proponents of the oxaloacetate benefits see it as a potential anti-aging and longevity tool. The rationale is that oxaloacetate increases NAD+ in the cell [5]. The existing studies on oxaloacetate and improving lifespan are limited to smaller animal models and yeast, which do not translate well to humans. However, it is clear that there are some mechanisms we can understand about how oxaloacetate might serve for anti-aging.

Another benefit of oxaloacetate is for clearly carcinogens from the system and detoxifying. Pesticides are common in our urban environment and oxaloacetate can reduce the effects of pesticides on our brain [6]. In fact, one 2014 animal model in the Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow Metabolism showed that oxaloacetate was neuroprotective against pesticides in the brain [7].

A similar benefit comes into play with traumatic brain injury. Studies show that a similar response in the brain happens after TBI as with the pesticide example above. In both cases, oxaloacetate can help [8].

Finally, there is some evidence to suggest oxaloacetate can have positive effects on certain types of cancer. Pancreatic cancer can be influenced by oxaloacetate [9] and the molecule has been helpful for making chemotherapy and radiation treatment more effective [10].

Oxaloacetate Side Effects

Oxaloacetate can be found in many foods, but few people acquire enough from their diet (especially those who have brain injury or exposure to pesticides). Unfortunately, there is not a lot of research about oxaloacetate to determine whether it comes with a host of side effects.

Simply because it is a molecule found in food that we need for optimal function does not mean there are no oxaloacetate side effects especially when considering how challenging it is to develop the supplement.

As rare as it is, Dave Asprey and the Bulletproof Executive team have developed a KetoPrime product made of oxaloacetate and few people have anecdotally complained about the side effects.

Oxaloacetate Dosage

Those who are using oxaloacetate for the purposes of reducing the risk of heart disease, combating aging, or improving endurance, 100 mg per day seems to be a daily dose. For those suffering from brain trauma or cancer, a large dose of 1000 mg per day is possible, but only immediately after the incident.

There are no studies that show what a specific oxaloacetate dosage should look like and there is no upper limit from the scientific literature either.

How and Why to Buy Oxaloacetate

It is not easy to buy oxaloacetate online because it is difficult to create into a product. This means there are few products (especially when the demand is low) and they are often expensive. Do not bother trying to find oxaloacetate for sale at a local health food or grocery store as it is probably not going to happen.

Online, there are only two real options. The first is a direct Amazon purchase from a brand called Fractal Health. While we have never heard of the brand before, it may be reputable based on some of the reviews. Proceed with caution, though as this is not one of the recommended vendors we can usually find.

Another alternative is to use KetoPrime from Bulletproof, which is focused on oxaloacetate and is probably more expensive compared to the Fractal Health product, but should be relatively safe.

Oxaloacetate Reviews

There aren’t many people using this supplement and so oxaloacetate reviews online might be challenging to find. For many people, the feeling associated with consuming this molecule is not super strong so there aren’t a lot of positive experiences and hype associated with oxaloacetate.

Even if you do find some oxaloacetate reviews, it might be a good idea to take it with a grain of salt just as you would any nootropic or supplement review. The research suggests more subtle effects and anecdotes can be great, but are definitely not the only piece of information to maintain.
